As assessment of an individual has become an important aspect in the field of distance learning, it is difficult for these institutions to verify whether the individual participated is the person enrolled. Author identification has played a vital role to prevent plagiarism as well as authenticating an individual's identity. This paper gives an overview of the methods which includes machine learning techniques such as "Support vector machines", that are useful for author identification to prevent plagiarism. It also includes various methods such as "QSUM technique", "Type-Token ratio", "Readability Measures", "Content Analysis" and "Artificial Neural Networks".
