Many, but not all, CS & IT academics tend to have a focus on theory and research and do not give much importance to the practice of software development. This is not an individual opinion. A scientifically conducted survey (hard data) is not needed for establishing that most CS & IT academics do not give much importance to software development as it is a well known truism to CS & IT students, parents of these students, employers of CS & IT graduates and society in general. This paper includes references to viewpoints expressed by academics, students and employers on the need to improve the practice of software development in CS & IT academia.
