The growth of the Internet and its increasing adoption by small businesses promises to change the landscape within which small businesses operate. This paper reports some of the results of a survey comparing computing related and other small business users of the Internet. The paper also reports on two approaches to administering a survey on the Internet as part of an exploratory study. The study found evidence of optimism among current small business users of the Internet. Small businesses that had experienced no net benefit from their Internet presence were prepared to maintain or expand their presence in the expectation of future competitive advantage.
