A smart card is a pocket-sized card containing an embedded intelligent integrated circuit (i.e., intelligence to respond to a request from an external device). Smart cards contain a microprocessor chip that serves the dual functions of communication and extensive data storage. These cards are user friendly and have the capacity to retain, and protect the critical information stored in an electronic form. Smart cards are being deployed in most public and private sectors. Typically, a smart card reader is used for data transactions with the smart card.
