The current problems in wireless systems are multi-path propagation, frequency selective fading, Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI), with the major challenge being transmission of information having high data rates over long distances. The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems solve a few of the above stated problems by the use of diversity schemes, which increase the reliability and security of the message. By adopting Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) and OFDM technologies, wireless systems could reach data rates up to several hundreds of Mbps and achieve spectral efficiencies of several tens of bits/Hz/s, which are unattainable for conventional Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) systems.
