A common business process might exist in multiple variations in an enterprise, due to different legal requirements in different countries, deviations in the supporting IT infrastructure, or differences in the organizational structure. In order to explore and control such variability, the authors argue that the notion of a core process, the invariant nucleus of all process variants, might be applied. In this paper, they discuss the spectrum of structural and behavioral aspects that might be leveraged to define such a process.
