Interconnect power is dynamic power dissipation due to interconnect capacitance switching. This paper describes how much power is consumed by interconnections, future generation trends, how to reduce interconnect power. Power is becoming a major design issue. The analysis showed that interconnect power consumed 50% of the dynamic power and 90% of the power is consumed by only 10% of the interconnections. Interconnect design is not power aware. Relations of interconnect power to wire length distribution and hierarchy level of nets were examined.
