It has been discussed the Hadoop system and its architecture in brief. The authors have explained Hadoop distributed file system including its features, goals and limitations in detail. HDFS is highly fault tolerant. The drawback of HDFS having only a single namenode is overcome by making use of multiple namenodes in the system. Distributing metadata evenly among multiple metadata servers is another issue for which, they have done comparative study of three schemes used for metadata management namely sub-tree partitioning, hashing and consistent hashing techniques.
