Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork (VANET) is borne out of integrating ad hoc network, Wireless LAN (WLAN) and cellular technology to achieve intelligent Vehicle-To-Vehicle communications (V2V) and to improve road traffic safety and efficiency. VANETs are different from other kinds of ad hoc networks by their hybrid network architectures, node movement characteristics, and application scenarios. This makes VANTEs to pose many unique research challenges, and the need to design of an efficient routing protocol is very crucial. In this paper, the authors discuss the research challenge of routing in VANETs and survey of recent routing protocols and related mobility models for VANETs.
