The basis of grand piano design was explored and established by the 1870s. Since then there have been refinements but no fundamental change. New materials and new analytical tools available to designers to improve piano quality remain largely unused. This paper discusses and displays features of piano sound and piano design to highlight areas where potential for improvement exists. Conservatism and resistance to change in the classical music industry is criticized for failing to offer the public the best in quality and variety of piano sound.
