In many signal processing applications high performance is required, while power and/or area consumption should be as low as possible. These requirements may only be satisfied by specialized hardware. Furthermore, the system should be flexible enough to handle little changes of the application in later development stages. Application Specific Processors (ASPs) provide a good trade-off between flexibility, performance and power/area consumption. A widely accepted model for ASPs is the Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) processor model.
