Model-based systems engineering and model-based software engineering are increasingly recognized as important engineering disciplines in which the system under development is modeled and analyzed prior to implementation. This paper addresses the integration of system modeling and software modeling, particularly for embedded systems, which are software intensive systems that consist of both hardware and software components. This paper describes a systems modeling approach to create structural and behavioral models of the total system using SysML. The systematic transition to software modeling using UML (Unified Modeling Language) is then described.
