In this paper, a novel illumination invariant preprocessing algorithm is introduced to overcome the illumination variation problems in face recognition. With this, the recognition system works effectively under a wide range of illumination variations. The system consists of three stages; preprocessing, a hybrid Fourier-based facial feature extraction, and recognition. Wavelet-based normalisation technique grays-out dark and highlight areas of the face image. To imitate the human visual system and examine a face image from the internal facial components to the external facial shapes, multiple face models with complementary features are constructed.
