Spatial data mining is the discovery of interesting relationships and characteristics that may exist implicitly in spatial databases. Spatial clustering, which groups similar spatial objects into classes, is an important component of spatial data mining. Spatial clustering can be used in the identification of areas of similar land usage in an earth observation database or in merging regions with similar weather pattern, etc. As a data mining function, spatial clustering can be used as a stand-alone too to gain insight into the distribution of data, to observe the characteristics of each cluster and to focus on particular set of clusters in future analysis.
