For many years, serial port has been an integral part of most computer operating systems in use today and has been considered to be one of the most basic external connections in the computer. Basically, serial ports provide a standard connector and protocol to let the users attach devices, such as modems in the computer. The advantage of using a serial port is that it needs only one wire to transmit the 8-bits of the byte compared to a parallel port which needs 8 wires.
