In optical wireless communication systems, modulation schemes such as PPM and DPPM are often used because of their power efficiency. One of the key difficulties of implementing PPM is that the receiver must be properly synchronized to align the local clock with the beginning of each symbol. Therefore, it is often implemented as differential pulse-position modulation. As the interest in the deployment of Free Space Optical (FSO) links gain momentum, it's becoming important to investigate the implementation of proposed higher state modulation schemes.
