Voice Capacity Improvement for IEEE 802.11 Multi-Rate Wireless Local Area Networks

The multiple transmission rates are allowed to simultaneously exist in an IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). However, the voice capacity in a multi-rate WLAN is influenced by two problems: the presence of the low rate calls and the bottleneck incurred by the Access Point (AP). In this paper, for solving these two problems and improving the voice capacity, the authors propose a scheme of providing differentiation service for the multi-rate nodes and the AP by adjusting the parameters of the minimum contention window size and voice codec.
