Digital signatures are among the most important cryptographic primitives in practice. They have many applications, including the use in SSL/TLS and securing software updates. Hash-based or Merkle Signature Schemes (MSS) are an interesting alternative to the signature schemes used today, not only because they are assumed to resist quantum computer aided attacks, but also because of their fast signature generation and verification times as well as their strong security guarantees. Most MSS come with a standard model security proof and outperform RSA in many settings regarding runtimes.
