Millions of infected computers are under command of criminals (bots under command of botmasters). Particularly the large number of unique IPs and the large combined bandwidth turn botnets into serious weapons (e.g. by means of Distributed Denial of Services (DDoS) attacks), and a profitable business (e.g. via spam or click fraud). Luckily, after a slow start, much botnet research has been done. The field can use some surveys of detection and defense techniques, however. This paper surveys current botnet disruptive and threat impact reducing techniques in literature. A similar detection survey is recommended for future research.
