Workplace violence policy

This policy describes measures for preventing workplace violence and outlines the steps your company and staff should take if violence does occur. The download includes a PDF version, along with a Word version to make customization easier.

From the policy:

According to the United States Department of Labor, approximately two million people throughout the country are victims of non-fatal violence at the workplace every year. Officials at the Department of Justice have found violence to be a leading cause of fatal injuries at work, with roughly 1,000 workplace homicides each year.

Violence must never be tolerated in the workplace. Each enterprise, regardless of size, should establish a written policy and require every employee, contractor, and on-premises third-party vendor to read and acknowledge it and to agree to comply with its principles.

Objective
A company goal is to create and maintain a work environment in which people are treated with dignity, decency, and respect. The work environment of the company will be characterized by mutual trust and the absence of intimidation, oppression, and exploitation. The establishment of a productive and non-hostile work environment is essential to the mission of the company. For that reason, the company will not tolerate violence of any kind. Through enforcement of this policy and by education of its employees, the company will seek to prevent, correct, and discipline behavior that violates this policy.

All employees, contractors, customers, and on-premises third-party vendors, regardless of their positions, are covered by, and are expected to comply with, this policy and to take appropriate measures to ensure that prohibited conduct does not occur. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against any employee, contractor, customer, or third-party vendor who violates this policy. Based on the seriousness of the offense, disciplinary action may include verbal or written reprimand, suspension or termination of employment, and in extreme cases criminal prosecution.
