Amazon is taking Prime out of the equation for Alexa+ on Fire TV, widening access to its generative AI assistant beyond subscribers. Beginning Aug. 19, eligible US Fire TV owners can use Alexa+ at no additional cost, even without Prime.
The change removes the need for non-Prime Fire TV users to buy the $19.99-a-month Alexa+ Standard Plan. It does not make the full Alexa+ service free, however, as some advanced Fire TV functions and access on compatible Echo devices still require Prime or the paid plan.
The Fire TV rollout is automatic on eligible devices, with no separate app to download or subscription to activate. Amazon says the expansion covers current-generation Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Ember smart TVs, and compatible televisions with Alexa+ built in.
Alexa+ expands across Fire TV
Amazon made Alexa+ broadly available in the US in February 2026. Prime members get unlimited Alexa+ access at no additional cost, while non-Prime customers can pay $19.99 per month for the full service or use a limited free chat experience through Alexa.com and the Alexa app.
The Aug. 19 change applies specifically to Fire TV. Amazon’s hardware lineup includes the Fire TV Stick HD introduced in April, which launched with Alexa+ support, along with Fire TV Cube and compatible televisions from brands including Hisense and Panasonic.
Alexa+ adds conversational entertainment search, letting viewers describe what they want instead of entering an exact title. Follow-up requests can narrow results by factors such as release date, actors, genre, or mood.
The assistant can also answer general questions and control compatible smart-home devices from the TV. Supported commands include adjusting connected lights, locking a paired smart lock, and showing a compatible Ring camera feed.
Free Fire TV access does not include every Alexa+ capability. Prime or the Standard Plan is still required for Alexa+ on compatible Echo devices and additional Fire TV functions including Alexa Routines, access to specific Ring camera moments, and advanced Home Modes.
Amazon says Alexa+ customers have nearly twice as many conversations on Fire TV as they did with the original Alexa. The company did not publish a methodology or baseline for the comparison.
AI assistants move into the living room
Free Fire TV access gives Amazon a larger audience for Alexa+ without eliminating its paid tier. The assistant can sit alongside streaming, content discovery, and connected-home controls on hardware customers already use.
Apple is reportedly planning a broader Siri smart-home push, while OpenAI is developing a screenless AI hardware device designed to handle tasks including questions and smart-home controls.
The free Fire TV offer remains limited to the US Alexa+ has continued expanding internationally, with its first Asia-Pacific rollout beginning in Australia on Aug. 6, following launches across Europe and the Americas.
Amazon says more Fire TV devices and regions may be added over time. Until then, eligible US Fire TV owners get broader Alexa+ access without Prime, while more advanced features and cross-device access remain tied to Amazon’s subscription offerings.
