BYD’s Flash Charging stations, capable of charging an EV’s battery three times faster than Tesla’s V4 Supercharger, are being rolled out across Europe.

BYD is trying to make long EV charging stops feel obsolete.

The Chinese automaker has introduced ultra-fast Flash Charging stations in Germany and the United Kingdom that can reportedly reach a peak output of 1,500 kW under specific hardware conditions. If BYD can scale the network, the rollout could put pressure on Tesla’s Supercharger advantage in Europe.

The catch is important: those headline speeds depend on compatible BYD hardware, including the company’s Blade Battery 2.0. That makes this less of a universal charging breakthrough, at least for now, and more of a high-stakes ecosystem play.

Introducing the Blade Battery 2.0

The very first vehicle to feature the Blade Battery 2.0, the Yangwang U7, began production by BYD in May 2025. The Yangwang U7 luxury sedan is currently exclusive to China. For those living in Europe, the Denza Z9 GT, which also features the Blade Battery 2.0, is currently available to order for approximately €115,000, or $134,500.

Stella Li, executive vice president of BYD, remarked on the company’s latest EV by saying: “The introduction of the Denza Z9 GT in Europe marks a very important milestone for our brand.”

She went on to call it “the perfect choice to introduce the principle of ‘Ready in 5, Full in 9, Cold Add 3’ to the world.”

Ready in five, full in nine, cold add three

The principle Li is referring to states that BYD’s EVs can be ready to go or charged from 10% to 70% within five minutes. A full recharge, which takes the battery from 10% to 97%, can be completed in just nine minutes. In colder temperatures, such as -30°C (-22°F), these totals might increase by up to 3 minutes.

Any way you cut it, these speeds are fast. They put BYD’s new Flash Charging stations on par with modern gas pumps in terms of speed, putting them well ahead of Tesla’s V4 Supercharger, which can take up to 35 minutes to recharge a battery from 10% to 80%.

However, to achieve maximum charging speed, the Blade Battery 2.0 needs to be connected to one of BYD’s Flash Charging stations. Although other hardware combinations are compatible with the new stations, none are expected to achieve the same speeds.

Rolling out charging stations in 2026 and beyond

Given that BYD’s Flash Charging stations are only available in Germany and the UK, it seems most consumers won’t be able to use the ideal setup with BYD hardware right away. If everything goes as planned, however, BYD expects to install an additional 3,000 charging stations in Europe and another 300 throughout the UK by the end of 2026.

While that’s certainly an ambitious goal, it could give BYD a huge advantage over the likes of Tesla and other EV startups if it comes to fruition.
