How we compared
We compared the US 256GB versions because that is the lowest shared storage tier between the two phones. The comparison uses Samsung’s official pricing and specifications alongside independent testing from Tom’s Guide.
The main buying criteria were:
- Price and value: Current Samsung US pricing at matched storage.
- Performance: Processor, RAM, and independent CPU and graphics benchmarks.
- Cameras: Camera hardware and real-world image comparisons.
- Display: Size, refresh rate, brightness, and portability.
- Battery and charging: Capacity, wired charging speeds, and independent battery observations.
- Software: Current Android and One UI versions, Galaxy AI features, and update support.
Benchmark results apply to the tested configurations. Samsung uses different processors in some markets, so performance figures here refer to the US Galaxy S26 with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy.
Price: Galaxy S26 FE saves $200 at 256GB
Samsung currently lists the 256GB Galaxy S26 FE at $799.99 and the 256GB Galaxy S26 at $999.99. The FE also comes in a 128GB configuration starting at $699.99.
Samsung raised Galaxy S26 prices in the US on Oct. 2 while leaving S26 FE pricing unchanged.
The extra $200 for the S26 primarily buys stronger performance, more RAM, a brighter adaptive display, a lighter body, and improvements to the camera system.
Performance: Galaxy S26 has a sizable lead
The Galaxy S26 uses 12GB of RAM and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in the US. The Galaxy S26 FE has 8GB of RAM and Samsung’s Exynos 2500.
Tom’s Guide recorded Geekbench 6 scores of 3,531 single-core and 10,778 multi-core for the Galaxy S26, compared with 2,444 and 7,958 for the S26 FE.
The gap also appeared in graphics testing. The S26 scored 7,059 at 42.27 fps in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited, while the S26 FE reached 5,318 at 31.85 fps.
That gives the Galaxy S26 a clear advantage for demanding games, heavier multitasking, and other performance-intensive workloads. The FE still has enough performance for typical browsing, messaging, streaming, and productivity.
Display and design: Bigger FE or lighter S26
The S26 FE has the larger screen at 6.7 inches, compared with 6.3 inches on the Galaxy S26.
The standard S26 has the more advanced panel. Its display supports an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate and reaches a rated peak brightness of 2,600 nits. The S26 FE switches between 60Hz and 120Hz and is rated at 1,900 nits.
The size difference is also noticeable in weight. The S26 weighs 167g, while the S26 FE weighs 193g.
Buyers who prefer a larger screen for video, games, or multitasking may favor the FE. The S26 is better suited to anyone who wants a smaller and lighter phone without moving to Samsung’s more expensive Ultra model.
Battery and charging: FE has the stronger specs
The Galaxy S26 FE has a 4,900mAh battery and supports 45W wired charging. The S26 has a smaller 4,300mAh battery with 25W charging.
Tom’s Guide found the FE reached 72% after 30 minutes of charging and completed a full charge in about 59 minutes.
The larger battery does not automatically mean better endurance. In the same outlet’s three-hour video streaming test, the S26 FE had 82% battery remaining, while the Galaxy S26 retained 85%.
Both phones support 15W wireless charging.
Cameras: Similar hardware, but S26 performs better
Both phones have a 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide camera, and a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.
The S26 uses a 10MP telephoto sensor, compared with 8MP on the S26 FE.
Tom’s Guide found the FE’s main camera could produce results close to the S26 in some conditions, but the Galaxy S26 generally delivered better detail, selfies, and low-light images.
The difference is smaller than the performance gap. Buyers who mainly take everyday photos may be satisfied with the FE, while the S26 has the stronger overall camera system.
Software and Galaxy AI: Very little separates them
The S26 FE launched with Android 17 and One UI 9. Samsung began rolling One UI 9, based on Android 17, out to the Galaxy S26 series on Sept. 16, although availability can vary by market and carrier.
Samsung promises both models seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates.
Galaxy AI features also overlap heavily, including Photo Assist, Now Brief, Now Nudge, Circle to Search, and other AI tools. Feature availability can vary by model, region, and language.
