The OnePlus Nord 6 could spend its final two years of software support on an older version of Android. OnePlus promises six years of security updates, but only four generations of Android OS upgrades.
That gap could affect application compatibility, mobile-device-management policies and long-term fleet planning. Security releases can patch vulnerabilities without delivering the platform features, privacy controls and APIs included in newer Android versions.
Six years of patches, four Android upgrades
The Nord 6 ships with OxygenOS 16, based on Android 16. OnePlus’ published support commitment covers at least four Android OS generations and six years of security updates from the launch date.
Four upgrades would take the phone through Android 20 if Google continues annual version numbering. The wording “at least four” allows OnePlus to provide more, but four is the guaranteed minimum for purchasing and lifecycle planning.
Release timing will remain under OnePlus’ control. Google’s Android 17 rollout began with supported Pixel devices in June 2026, while phones from OnePlus, Samsung and other manufacturers follow separate testing and deployment schedules.
Samsung and Google offer longer platform commitments on some competing devices. Samsung promises the Galaxy A56 up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades, plus six years of security updates. Google gives the Pixel 9a seven years of updates, including OS and security releases.
Longer security support does not prevent obsolescence
A phone can remain eligible for fixes to newly disclosed flaws while falling behind on applications, management functions and platform APIs. Google’s June 2026 Android security release fixed dozens of vulnerabilities, including one that the company said may have faced limited, targeted exploitation.
Applications can also raise their minimum operating-system requirements. WhatsApp is scheduled to drop Android 5 support on September 8, 2026, illustrating how a working phone can lose access to important software as its platform ages.
Organizations considering the Nord 6 should verify the policy for the exact regional model they intend to buy. They should also check Android Enterprise status, mobile-device-management compatibility and expected patch frequency. OnePlus specifies the support period but does not guarantee on its specifications page that every update will reach all markets, carriers or sales channels simultaneously.
European Union rules add a separate maintenance baseline. The EU ecodesign regulation requires applicable security, corrective and functionality updates to remain available without charge for at least five years after a covered model is no longer placed on the market. It does not guarantee five new Android generations.
The Nord 6 offers a long security-maintenance window, but the six-year figure does not mean six years of new Android versions. Samsung and Google provide more platform longevity on some competing phones, which may matter more for deployments expected to last five years or longer.
