Samsung wants its AI to suggest the next step. OPPO wants AI to handle more of the work, including organizing files and completing tasks across applications.

OPPO launched ColorOS 17 with its Find X10 series on Oct. 21, 2026, ahead of a wider rollout. Samsung began expanding One UI 9 to the Galaxy S26 series on Sept. 16, following its debut on the Galaxy Z Fold8 lineup. Both updates run on Android 17, but their approaches to AI, multitasking, and privacy differ.

Samsung emphasizes contextual assistance and established productivity tools, while OPPO is introducing agents that can manage personal files. Their capabilities and handling of sensitive information could influence which platform users choose.

Samsung’s AI assistance vs. OPPO’s file agents

Samsung’s One UI 9 announcement highlights customizable Now Brief cards for daily summaries and expanded Now Nudge suggestions. During supported conversations, Now Nudge can surface reservation details or help users save shared locations without switching apps.

OPPO’s AI Mind Suggest also provides contextual reminders. Its more ambitious feature is AI Mind Pilot’s Agent Mode, developed with Manus.

OPPO says Agent Mode can locate and organize files, retrieve information across applications, and complete multistep requests. For example, it can gather travel reservations and produce an itinerary without users manually assembling the information.

Samsung focuses more on assistance within existing workflows. Neither company’s documentation establishes which AI approach is more accurate or reliable.

Multitasking also differs. Samsung supports split-screen applications through Multi Window and desktop-style productivity through Samsung DeX on compatible devices.

OPPO emphasizes background performance. Its ColorOS 17 announcement claims the update keeps more than 25% more applications running in the background than ColorOS 16. It also reports rendering-load reductions of up to 30% in selected scenarios.

These are manufacturer-reported figures, not independent comparisons with Samsung. Background-app retention and split-screen productivity measure different capabilities.

Compatibility matters, too. The Galaxy S22 series is among the older devices expected to miss the One UI 9 upgrade, based on Samsung’s original software-support commitments.

How we compared them: We examined Samsung’s and OPPO’s official feature documentation, device compatibility, privacy controls, and published performance figures, focusing on documented capabilities.

Privacy controls, rollout limits, and the verdict

Samsung’s Security Brief highlights potential security concerns, including malware and unnecessary permissions. Privacy Alerts use on-device AI to flag potentially unnecessary background access, although only selected Galaxy devices support the feature.

OPPO says AI Mind Pilot keeps original files on-device during local tasks. Users must authorize sharing relevant information when external processing is necessary.

ColorOS 17 also introduces a Transparency Report for cloud AI activity and additional encryption safeguards through Private Computing Cloud. Neither manufacturer’s documentation establishes superior security in independent testing.

Availability remains uneven. OPPO’s ColorOS 17 rollout roadmap lists additional eligible devices through December 2026. In India, OnePlus began rolling out ColorOS 17 ahead of schedule, reaching the OnePlus 13, 13s and 15R on Oct. 26, followed by the 13R on Oct. 27. Availability elsewhere depends on the device and market.

Samsung’s One UI 9 is better suited to users who rely on split-screen multitasking, DeX, and AI suggestions integrated into everyday tasks. OPPO’s ColorOS 17 may appeal more to those interested in automating file organization and other multistep activities, although Agent Mode’s reliability still needs independent testing.

Neither update is an automatic winner. The more useful choice depends on which features your phone supports, how you prefer to multitask, and how comfortable you are granting AI tools access to personal information. Before upgrading or switching brands, check your device’s eligibility and the availability of the features you actually plan to use.
