I’m setting up a small server room and trying to standardize the rack consoles. For those of you who’ve managed racks in US data centers or SMB server rooms:
Do you prefer a 1U rackmount keyboard console or a 2U setup?
I’m mainly comparing:
1U Consoles
Slim profile
Saves rack space
Typically comes with LCD + keyboard + touchpad
Might feel a bit tight for long use
2U Consoles
More comfortable keyboard height
Slightly larger display options
Better for people who work directly in the rack more often
Takes up an extra unit, which can matter in smaller racks
What I’m wondering:
Is the space saving of 1U worth it?
Any issues with durability, rails, or heat in either size?
Do you find 2U noticeably more comfortable?
What’s standard in your environment right now?
Would love to hear real-world experiences from anyone who’s deployed these in homelab, SMB, or full-size data center racks.
