A question of ethics and principle

by maxwell edison . Updated 23 years ago

I’m going to open this thread with a simple question, and as a result I’ll probably open myself up for hoards of criticism. But that’s okay, I can take it, so please be forthright and honest. I feel comfortable with what I did, and the worst case scenario would be my realization that I made an error (but I doubt it) or that I will simply agree to disagree with some people. And since I can live with either one of those outcomes (or any other outcome, for that matter), here goes.

First, the premise of the question:

In the context of a different thread, I posted a message that contained the full and unedited contents of an email sent to me by another TechRepublic member. This particular email was not sent to me through the “contact peer” function, but rather directly, as this other member and I have conversed via email on quite a number of occasions. I’ll admit that I posted the email in the midst of a verbal feud with this member, he sent this email to me in the heat of that verbal feud, and it was, in part, an attempt to partake in a little “get even with him-ism”. But I had a bigger reason as well. (And depending on how this thread develops, I may or may not elaborate on that bigger reason. But if you want to know, just ask, and I’ll email a reply to you – and do whatever you want with my email.) But suffice it to say that the email was very disturbing, and the thought did cross my mind that other TechRepublic members may be setting themselves up for a similar experience.
