Active Directory Auto Installs

by steak1986 . Updated 18 years, 2 months ago

I am starting to tinker with a new Active directory for my office, they have been stuck in work groups for a while(250-300 PCs). The argument I won my bosses over with is auto deployment of new programs, so that on our many public machines we could just push out a new prgoram that will replace the old versions. I am very curious in how to do this especially without .msi files. I would love to push out programs that are not in .msi format, mainly because all of our installs are .exe. I have dabbled with this a few times in the past but never sank myself into it. The last time I dabbled with this I found a few programs that would record my actions through the install and make an .msi file. I still had issues with automatically installing once I had the .msi. The discussion I would like to start is what do you or your office use to create .msi files. Do you use the auto install function, does it work as anticipated, any wierd tendencies I should be aware of.
