Advice – about new file server

by monte admin . Updated 24 years, 5 months ago

We are looking at getting rid of some old servers and consolidating to 1 new file server with about 180 some GB. Other than having a single point of failure what is your opinion on this? We considered just getting a NAS appliance but we are a Windows only enviornment and it didn’t make much sense because we wouldn’t be able to apply virus protection and the like.

Anyway is there anyone out there that has a similar setup that can provide guidance as to the pitfalls / bottlenecks? We onlyhave about 150 users with about 300 total users for about 3 months out of the year (even then the extra temps share computers). Do you think it is necessary to have load balancing NIC cards or do you think one would do (100 mb switched network)? We have a couple of users that have very large Access databases (1GB) that I have heard cause “things to be slower” but I haven’t noticed much difference. Any advice would be good. I don’t want to make an expensive mistake. thanks in advance.
