Here is what it does and here is how to fix it step by step:
When you try to go to a webpage you get a message at the bottom of screen ‘contacting (here mine said 127.0.0.13)’ then it defaults to shdoclc.dll errors files; dnserror, etc. WRITE DOWN THE DNS IT IS TRYING TO REACH! (at the bottom of your web browser just before your default file loads(mine was 127.0.0.13)
Go to START, then SEARCH, then FOR FIND FILES
Add the DNS address that itis trying to contact in the ‘CONTAINING TEXT’ area
Be sure in the LOOK IN: is set your local hard drive (C:/) SEARCH NOW
If there is a file named “HOSTS” (extension is “FILE”); open it up in wordpad.
The beginning of the line shows the error! This line redirects all req on your proxy to go to a default…which in the example below is 127.0.0.13 aol.enetbot.com…then it never makes it to the next DNS 127.0.0.1
127.0.0.13 aol.enetbot.com127.0.0.1 ie3.proxy.aol.com
127.0.0.1 ie3.proxy.aol.com
When this file is renamed it only causes YOUR BROWSER TO WORK AGAIN! Mine recreated a .sam “HOSTS” file which is handling the direction my browser sends now.
Here’s how to get rid of the problem:
If still in search window you can right click, RENAME (whatever you want; something simple like “hosts1” so you can reinstate if you need to) and then reboot!
OR
Go to WINDOWS directory (whatever that maybe; win, win98, windows) on the c:/ drive.
Find a file named “HOSTS”; has extension ‘file’
Right click “HOSTS”
RENAME to whatever you want; something simple like “hosts1” so you can find to reinstate if you need to!
REBOOT
Open your internet browser and connect to your server and try to open a webpage! It should work now!
