Curious on your thoughts. Something this detailed is probably not suited for a forum but as an internal support manager it’s something I wanted to get off of my chest and get feedback from others in the IT profession.
I think there are a lot of reasons why our organization should track application usage and fatal errors (application crashes). We’ve started doing this at a very basic level and essentially we have a test group that logs application crashes and correlates this back to application usage.
Unfortunately we aren’t very sophisticated yet and the application usage used for the correlation is based on clock time in the foreground… not CPU utilization, which would give us better data on more intensive uses of the app.
The thinking behind this is that the application data when combined with our inventory data (which reports on software application version information) will enable us to make more intelligent decsions as far as upgrading / deploying new products and general support where we try and do pro-active maintanance and change out “under performing” workstations- computers that take a lot of support time.
Am I way off base? Is there value in continuing with this test? Does anybody know of any products that attempt to do this?
