Apple device mirroring / AirPlay

Hi, I would like to know if my understanding is correct:
As long as I purchase an Apple TV Box and connect to my NON-Air Play enabled TV via HDMI cable it would be able to mirror my iPhone/ iPad?
Is there any scenario when this doesn’t hold true?
