Are some PC’s on steroids?

I live out in Seattle and I’m amazed at some of the PC’s these kids are building. Its as if PC’s have replaced the 60’s muscle cars.
I was at a high volume retail electronic store and I saw PC parts that rivalled appliances in size.

Quad processors, water coolers, Terrabyte drives, monster fans and case that came with 7 fans and neon lights and styling that would have made GM’s Harley Earl envious. Monster audio and monster video. I won’t be surprised if they drew 1000 watts.

Mostly its to run games and streaming media and to interact with their cellphones, Ipods and bluetooth. Its cool to be a nerd nowadays and tech savvy.

Makes me amused because at work I service a local chain’s restaurant’s ordering PC’s and they are circa 1990, DOS, X486 and x386 units with 25K ram and 20 gig hard drives. In some cases, no fans on the CPU, just a heat sink. No CD rom’s
And almost fun to work on. Remember Himem and ramdrive? And DOS commands?

Makes me almost miss the good old days..before gigabit ethernet, wireless and viruses. I started out on 14.4 K modems and Windows 3.1.
