Automatic Updates

Today the network administrator says to go around the entire office and see if each computer has any automatic updates on and turn them off. i.e especially for IE, mozilla, windows, adobe and such other applications where you can enable this option. The reason is because our web traffic is increasing as well as bandwidth . Does having automatic updates on affect web traffic and or bandwidth? I really would appreciate an answer. thanks
