Best Programming Languages and Tips for a Beginner

I’m currently working toward an AAS in Programming an System Analysis, and I’m a little bit uncertain as to which direction I ought to take. Currently, I know some Java and a little more VB, but I would also like to learn some other languages on my own time as well; especially considering the way the job market is currently going. On that note, I’m particularly interested in Linux, and especially with WINE, as I believe that it’ the key to Linux gaining greater acceptance as a whole. In addition, I’m also quite interested in improving security-related apps/utilities… but haven’t a clue what to study for such.

Advice, anyone?
