Best way to learn linux?

I would like to learn Linux? What are some good books for newbies and where can I get the OS.
I have a phone line to the internet so I don’t want to download the OS. I need some advice on what to purchase at the local Fry’s computer store. Good books are critical or even some videos if possible if they are around.
How to learn this thing is important to me I don’t want to spin my wheels if I can help it.
Advice, advice advice, how do I do it.
