BIND / DNS and subnetting/subdomaining

by kampmann . Updated 25 years, 1 month ago

HI,

I am running a Subdomain within a greater institution. This includes a
BIND primary nameserver (the computer being a router at the same time) on our side being
authoritative for the domain

thg.x.de

Now this node with the NS went down and we separated router and ns-functions.

without establishing a new ns instead
useing the “/etc/hosts” table 🙂

the people responsible for “x.de” said
we could not have a ns established
because our net was not subnetted.

the netaddress is something like 172.22.0.0. (class B – no CIDR so far)

and my point and the question to you is:

when we use part of that net 172.22.0.0 (say from 0 to 8192 nodes with CIDR),
can we establish a subdomain without
subnetting, which means: can we establish our “old” nsbeing authoritative for these
computers, having

thg.x.de as domain (subdomain “thg”)

I would appreciate a fast answer thank you in advance

J?rg
