Biometrics vs SmartCards

I am currently debating within my team which is the better authentication option for our organization to use 1. Biometrics (fingerprint scanners), 2. SmartCards or a combination of both? We are geographically dispersed and utilize use a combination of thin clients, notebooks and remote access. What are the thoughts and experiences out there?
