Booting Linux from a USB Stick

I need to hook up the hard drive from an old laptop to a HP TPN-I120 and in the past (due to the fact I’ve forgotten the windows password), I’ve booted Linux from a USB stick or CD to bypass the password.

The other day, I tried the same thing, but am unable to find the correct combination of F key and when to press it. Can anyone offer a suggestion?
