Breaking IN

I am recently retired after a twenty year hitch in the US Navy as an Electronic Technician. I’m a little tired of working with military equipment thus IT seems the logical transition for the next twenty years.
Question: What in your opinion wouldbe the best avenue for breaking into IT? I have studied for and passed both tests for A+ Certification. Intuition tells me that’s at least a good start. I’m now thinking to simply checking into UNLV and finishing up my degree in MIS. I figure I could work as a PC tech part time to assist in the cost. If anyone knows a better approach for a guy in his mid-forties please enlighten me.
