Can I DCPROMO Win2000 standalone server

I would like to DCPROMO a Win2000 standalone server 2 a BDC and start 2 upgrade my NT4 domain 2 a win2000 server domain. I haven’t read much about Active Directory yet, can I avoid it during the DCPROMO?
