Can only load XP from a copied CD, not from actual Microsoft XP CD

I am trying to reimage a Compaq laptop and I can’t load XP with the Microsoft OS CD, but I can load from a bootleg copy. If I run a MS OS CD, it’ll initally run, but when it gets to the actual installation process, the CD-ROM makes continuous loud clicking noises, but it doesn’t do that with the bootleg. I used the copy to isolate where the problem is and this has stumped me. Any suggestions?
