Can’t delete logical volume in AIX 4.1.5

I can’t delete a logical volume from my AIX 4.1.5 system. Question marks appear next to the entry in smitty. I suspect some internal pointers to tables are not set consistently but there must be a way around the problem. I can assign a filesystem on top of the logical volume, then remove the file system but can not remove the logical volume.
