can’t make config in Red Hat 6.2

I have an install of Red Hat 6.2 in which I am unable to compile the kernel. I have tried using make config, make xconfig, make menuconfig and a few others but am always replied to with “parameters not set STOP” Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
