can’t open attached email in Outlook 2003

i can’t open emails that are forwarded to me as attachments. i have no problem with other types of attachments. i don’t get an error message – it is just that nothing happens when i try to open these attachments. this has not always happened – it is a recent problem but i can’t pinpoint when it started. can anyone help me with this?
