CD recognition problems

Please advise how I would go about rectifying my hardware/software for my CD / DVD recording. It reads CD’s and opens them no problem but when I go to create a CD be it data or audio the message pops up “please insert a blank CD” I have put a CD-R in a CD-RW ad DVD and it does not recognize it resulting in not being able to save info. Please help I am working on Windows XP
