cd rom

I have a delta electronic cd-rom on a an old computer using windows 98.during boot i get the error message failure fixed disk 1. I checked the cable and even swapped it out for a known good one and still get the same message.I am beginning to suspect cmos settings but do not know what they should be.can anyone help me.
