Certifications v/s Experience

Hi

Is the hype created by Certification Agencies (CQA, Lead Assessor, etc.) justified? Do these certifications really improve your knowledge or are they just the current hot items?

Is it worth spending all that money to earn certifications or should one invest in something more tangible?
