Changing modes on directories

There are several directories that apparently installed with permissions set to 555 or
“dr-xr-xr-x” with the supreuser as the owner. How can this be chaged without having write permisson. Any attempt to change the results in an error stating theobvious, that I can’t change modes. One of the directories is the home directory where I want to put users home directories.
