changing OS serial number for activation after OS reinstall

I reinstalled XP Pro on a PowerSpec machine at work from a Dell reinstall CD, and I want to activate the license with one of our volume XP licenses. I tried activation once and it didn’t work. What do I need to do? Thanks for help.
